What is ‘’Mid-Century Modern’’?

If you watched the series ‘’Mad men’’ you’d get a good idea of what this design style is all about.

This is very similar to ‘’Retro’’ except that it doesn’t use bright colors like neons and pink.

Mid-century modern is classic with clean lines, minimal ornamentation as the core if this design style is functionality & simplicity. It is

uncluttered and incorporates sleek lines with both organic and geometric forms. This can be easily achieved with accent walls & the right choice of furniture pieces like the Saarinen Womb Chair and Tulip Table , Arne Jacobson Egg Chair, Grant Featherston’s chairs or the Beni Ourain area rug.

You can trace the features of this design style back to a school of architecture that began in early twentieth-century Germany: the

Bauhaus school. This school also influenced the Minimalism & Nordic Design Style which is why you will see Scandinavian furniture being used in this design style as well as Minimalism & Nordic.

The classical colors for this design style is olive green, navy blue, mustard & grey.

There is a juxtaposition of material where natural material like wood, plywood, brass & glass can be used along with vinyl, resin, fibreglass and plastic.
